Photography; An Expensive Hobby Part 2

As i mentioned in the earlier posts i understand high prices of camera’s in photography industry. But most of other equipment is unnecessarily expensive. Especially in countries that importing photography equipment even the simplest ones like flash diffuser and reflectors are quite expensive.

But this price problem of photography industry is cause low demand on photography gear. And low demand is keeping the prices high due to lack of competition. Because of this some photography equipment like studio lights is quite expensive to buy for the amateurs. So people interested in photography are being forced to choose genres of photography that doesn’t require complicated equipment such as documentary and street photography. If you want to have your own studio, it will cost you about $15.000-$20.000 with the proper equipment (in Turkey). I don’t think $500 is the fair price for the most simple and cheapest studio light. This is keeping people away from this hobby. If you want to use and buy these equipment either you have to be a professional and earn money by using these tools or you should be wealthy enough to buy these equipment to satisfy your need and want for photography. I really don’t have much opinion about USA but in Turkey prices of advance photography equipment are kept high on a purpose, to keep competition low. In Turkey except some, most of the photography studios are not producing quality works (pictures). And with the proper gear even a beginner photographer can do what they do, by spending a week working on the equipment. So if the equipment prices in Turkey is reasonable and affordable by average people, there would be less need for those “professional” photography studios. This is another reason keeping the photography away from the people who want to be interested in photography.

But no matter where you live and which economical conditions you are in, if you are interested in photography and if you have some money to spend on photography. Do not afraid of the prices or costs. There’s always an alternative. For example i made my first studio light myself and still using it. I attached a “hot” halogen projector to an old tripod of mine. and “tadaa” i’ve the studio light for $15. Ok it is doesn’t have high performance as pro studio lights but it was doing quite well for a beginner photographer. Look at these pictures;

There’s no muslin background just the sheets bought from local office store, nos studio light just the simple homemade hot bulb light. Results are not that bad… You can do it too. But if you are living in USA you are even bit lucky because the prices there are more reasonable and relatively affordable for amateurs. Also you can reach various equipment in different price ranges. But if you are in a country that photography is very expensive as an hobby, you can always create own equipment for low prices. Use your creativity this is what photography is about. To learn more about producing own equipment read my posts about this subject, and search the internet, you’ll find helpful information.
